What factors affect the distribution of ventilatioin and perfusion of the lungs?

Expert Answer

Step 1

Respiration is the process of gaseous exchange taking place in the lungs. Each cell of our body requires oxygen for its normal functioning and is usually exchanged for carbon dioxide. Blood carries the carbon dioxide, a metabolic waste of every cell, to the site of gas exchange in the lungs, where it is removed by exhalation.

Step 2

The ventilation refers to the process through which the air reaches the alveoli, tiny sacs of lungs that allows rapid gaseous exchange. Perfusion is the process through which the blood reaches the alveoli via capillaries.

Step 3

The ratio of ventilation and perfusion determines the concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. The principle factor that affects the distribution of ventilation ...
