What is a sample mean? What is a sample proportion? Summarize the notation used for these statistics.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Sample mean :

It is sum of all observation in the sample divided by total number of observations.  It is denoted by " x¯ "

Sample mean is best point estimate of population mean ( μ )

Formula :

  x¯ =  xin

Example :

Let sample data , xi : 15, 10, 13, 18, 14

So, sample mean for this data is,

x¯ = xin  x¯ = 15+10+13+18+145x¯ = 705x¯ = 14
