What is an epithelial cell?

Cell is a basic structural and functional unit in an organism. An organism contain different types of cell in its body with each of these types having its own specific function at its location.

Epithelial cells are those cells which that form outer lining,  lining on various organs, blood vessels as well as internal cavities. These cells consitute a tissue called Epithelial tissue or Epithelium.

Epithelial cells are of three types:

Squamous epithelial cells : These cells appear like flat and thin plates. These are present in skin, alveoli of lung , pericardium and blood vessel  etc.

Cuboidal epithelial cells: These cells are cube like in shape and serve the purpose of secreation in various exocrine glands. Also, these cells are present in linings of pancreas , kidney tubules, ovaries etc. These cells assist in passive difusion of different materials.

Columnar epithelium : These are elongated cells and may have villi and microvilli to increase surface area. The main function of such cells containing microvilli is absorption of nutrients. These are modified as Goblet cells, to secreate mucus, and are present in duodenum.
