Question

What is the difference between a paracentric and a pericentric inversion?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Chromosomes are thread-like structures situated inside the nucleus of plant and animal cells. Each chromosome is made up of single molecules of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and protein. Chromosomal inversion is a rearrangement of the chromosome in which a chromosome segment is reversed end to end. Chromosomal inversion takes place when two breaks happen inside the same chromosome and the hereditary material in between the breaks is reversed. There are two types of inversion, namely paracentric and pericentric.
