What is the mass percent of water in magnesium chloride hexahydrate?

Expert Answer

Step 1

Molecular formula of Magnesium chloride hexahydrate = MgCl2.6H2O

Formula to calculate % of water:

% of water = mass of water / molar mass of hydrate X 100

Mass of water in the given molecule = 6 X 18 = 108 g

Molar mass of the hydrate = 203.30 g

Substitute the values in the above formula,
