What is the maximum number of stereoisomers possible for a compound with: (a) three stereogenic centers; (b) eight stereogenic centers?

Expert Answer

Step 1

Constitutional isomers can be defined as the molecules which have the same molecular formula and different connectivity. The constitutional isomers must have same molecular formula. The stereoisomers are the isomers which form non-superimposable mirror images. They must be chiral and should not have any plane of symmetry.

Step 2

The number of stereoisomers for a molecule can be calculated with the help of formula as:

Number of possible stereoisomers= (2n-the number of meso compound)

n = the total number of stereocenters

Step 3

A molecule with three stereogenic centers will have 23=8 stereoisomers. For example, the al...
