Expert Answer

Step 1

A character in an organism is given by gene, which is generally represented by two alleles. One of them is dominant and is symbolized by a capital letter. Another is recessive and is symbolized by a small letter.

In every organism, a pair of alleles is present. So, there are three possible genotypes for a character in an organism.

  • Homozygous dominant: In this both the alleles of a gene are dominant. It represents dominant phenotype.
  • Homozygous recessive: In this both the alleles of a gene are recessive. It represents recessive phenotype.
  • Heterozygous: In this one allele is dominant another is recessive. It represents dominant phenotype as the presence of dominant allele masks the phenotype of the recessive allele.
Step 2

As per Mendel's law of segregation, during gamete formation, the alleles of a gene, present in an organism, undergo segregation and each gamete receives one allele.

If the organism is of homozygous genotype, it can form only one type of gamete as it has only one allele present as a pair. So, an individual with homozygous recessive or homozygous dominant genotype will form gametes with recessive or dominant allele respectively.

If the organism has heterozygous genotype, then it can form two types of gametes i.e. with recessive as well as with dominant allele. The probability of each type is equal, i.e. 0.5

Step 3

As per question, genotype of first parent is Hh i.e. heterozygous

Genotype of second parent is hh i.e. homozygous recessive

Hence, Parental Genotype                  Hh                             hh
