Diaphragm

The diaphragm is a large dome-shaped skeletal muscle. It is present just below the lungs and heart.

Diaphragm contract and expand in a repetitive manner, results in an increase and decrease in the volume of thoracic cavity.

Rhythmic movement of the diaphragm is controlled by the phrenic nerve.

There are three openings present in the diaphragm -

  1. Esophageal opening- Esophagus passes through this opening.

  2. Caval opening - Inferior vena cava passes through this opening.

  3. Aortic opening- The aorta passes through this opening.
