Roots are the underground parts of the plant that help in the absorption of dissolved minerals and water from the soil. Sometimes roots are modified into specialized structures that depend upon the external environment like storage roots. Storage roots are modified roots which stores starch and water such as beetroot, sweet potato.

The root of vascular plants is composed of three main parts: vascular tissues, cortex, and epidermis. The epidermis is the outermost part of the young root, after growth, the epidermis is replaced by a different structure known as periderm. Cortex is present towards the inner side of epidermis. It is further subdivided into hypodermis, parenchyma cells, and endodermal cells. Inside the cortex stele is present. It is mainly composed of pericycle and vascular tissues.
