A germ layer is a group of cells in an embryo that interact with each other as the embryo develops and contribute to the formation of all the organs and tissues of the body. During gastrulation, the blastula reorganizes into two primary germ layers, an inner layer called the endoderm and an outer layer called the ectoderm. In triploblastic animals, the endoderm and ectoderm interact to form a third germ layer called mesoderm.

Endoderm:

The endoderm consists of flattened cells, which eventually turns into columnar cells. It forms the epithelial lining of the entire digestive tract except for the mouth, pharynx and the terminal part of the rectum. It also forms the lining of the glands which opens into the digestive tract, including those of the liver and pancreas; the epithelium of the auditory tube and tympanic cavity; the trachea, bronchi, and alveoli of the lungs; the bladder and part of the urethra; and the follicle lining of the thyroid gland and thymus.

Mesoderm:

The mesoderm has several components which develop into tissues: intermediate mesoderm, paraxial mesoderm, lateral plate mesoderm, and chorda-mesoderm.
