What would be the product of a reaction involving 2-methyl-2-pentene and HBr both with and without the presence of peroxides?

Expert Answer

Step 1

Here, we have to write the product form when 2-methyl-2-pentene react with HBr both with and without the presence of peroxides.

Step 2

When HBr adds to 2-methyl-2-pentene. the proton in HBr is electrophilic, it reacts with the alkene to form a carbocation. Bromide ion reacts rapidly with the carbocation to give a stable product in which the elements of HBr have added to the ends of the double bond.

Step 3

Product form when 2-methyl-2-pentene react with HBr  without the presence of peroxides:

Addition of HBr to 2-methyl-2-pentene without peroxide follows Markovnikov rule.

Markovnikov’s rule: The addition of a pr...
