Amino acids are organic molecules that are the basic unit of proteins. Methionine is an essential amino acid. Essential amino acids are not synthesized by the human body; therefore, they must be supplied through the food.

Methionine plays many key roles in the cell: in protein synthesis and function, DNA methylation and it is also an essential amino acid.

Methionine is coded by AUG, start codon. The AUG is the most common start codon in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The start codon sends the initial signal for the translation of proteins from the mRNA transcript. If methionine is not present in the cell protein formation is hindered. Proteins are required for the proper functioning and survival of the cell.

Methionine is a sulfur-containing essential amino acid. Amino acids are the building blocks of the body, Methionine deficiency can cause various abnormalities.

Gene expression is regulated by various post-transcriptional modification of histone proteins. Histone is a protein molecule that wraps the DNA around itself.
