Where does the oxygen used in cellular respiration primarly come from?

Cellular respiration is a set of biochemical processes by which cells utilize food products to release energy in the form of ATP. There are several stages or pathways of cellular respiration namely glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, TCA cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation.

Cellular respiration takes place either in the presence of oxygen (aerobic respiration) or in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic respiration). Aerobic respiration is more efficient than anaerobic respiration since aerobic respiration produces 15 times more ATP than anaerobic respiration.

Step 3

Cellular respiration utilizes oxygen to burn the foodstuff in order to produce fuel for metabolic reactions. The process utilizes oxygen and releases carbon dioxide as metabolic waste.
