Introduction

Geometrical isomerism is a type of stereoisomerism in which the bonds between the ligands and central metal atom has different spatial arrangement. It can be of two types : cis and trans 

  • If two similar ligands in the complex are present adjacent to each-other they are known as cis isomers.
  • If two similar ligands in the complex are present opposite to each-other they are known as trans isomers.

The complexes which have the capability to exist in cis and trans forms are said to exhibit geometrical isomerism.
