Step 1

Ionic bond is formed by the complete transfer of valence electron(s) between atoms. It is a type of chemical bond that generates two oppositely charged ions. In ionic bonds, the metal loses electrons to become a positively charged cation, whereas the non-metal accepts those electrons to become a negatively charged anion. This bonding occurs between a metal and a non-metal.

Covalent bond is formed by the sharing of electrons between the two atoms. This bonding occurs primarily between non-metals; however, covalent bond can also be observed between non-metals and metals.

Also, mostly the bonds between the atoms are formed in such a say so as to fulfil their octet rule, that is, an atom must have 8 electrons in their valence shell after forming a bond. The main exception to the rule is hydrogen, lithium and beryllium, in which there must be 2 electrons in its valence or the last shell.

Step 2

(a) In NH3, N atom has five valence electrons and H has one valence electron. So, N atom shares its three valence electrons with three H atoms to fulfil their octet rule. Sharing of valence electrons lead to formation of covalent bond among nitrogen and hydrogen atoms.
