Which of the following is NOT a difference in blood between males and females?

A.Males have a larger volume of blood than females

B.Males have a higher hemocrit percentage of plasma than females

C. males have more erythrocytes than females

D. All of the above are true

Expert Answer

Step 1

Blood is a body fluid that transports oxygen (O2) and carries nutrients to all parts of the body. Moreover, blood carries carbon dioxide (CO2) and other metabolic waste to the kidneys, lungs, and digestive system to eliminate from the body. Blood is pumped by the heart. Blood is considered as a liquid as well as a tissue. This is because it is a collection of specialized cells (red blood cells and white blood cells) that serves specific functions. These cells are suspended in plasma, a yellowish liquid matrix, which makes the blood fluid.

Step 2

The option (A) “Males have a larger volume of blood than females” is correct.

In a healthy adult, the average blood volume is 5 liters. Moreover, males and females having approximately the same volume of blood. Hence, it is not considered as a major difference in blood between males and females. Therefore, the option (A) “Males have a larger volume of blood than females” is correct.

Step 3

The hemocrit is also termed as an erythrocyte volume fraction (EVF) or packed cell volume (PCV).  It measures the volume of red blood cells related to the total blood volume. The normal PCV for men is 45% and for women is 40%. It clearly indicates a difference in blood between males and females. Therefore, option (B) “Males have a higher hemocrit percentage of plasma than females” is incorrect.

Erythrocyte is commonly referred to as a red blood cell (RBC). Erythrocytes contain a pigment called hemoglobin, which plays an important role in transporting O2 and CO2 to and from the body tissues. Erythrocyte count may vary between male and female.  For example, erythrocyte count for males is approximately 5.4 million...
