With suitable electrophile, aromatic compound undergoes electrophilic substitution reaction.

Sulfur trioxide is used as an electrophile during sulfonation of benzene. Fuming sulfuric acid and sulfur trioxide are added to benzene to produce benzenesulfonic acid

Step 2

If the substituents donate electron to the ring, the electron density increases which results activation of ring. Thus, the reaction rate increased. Due to inductive effect and resonance effect activation of ring by substituent arises.

Substituent that activates the ring: alkyl, vinyl, phenyl, NH2 etc.
