Step 1

The energy of an electron is determined by its principal quantum number ‘n’ which denotes  the principal energy level of  an electron. Each principal energy level of an electron contains a sublevel which is denoted by the symbol ‘l’. This ‘ l’ is also known as azimuthal quantum number. Sublevel of an atom is defined by the azimuthal quantum number ‘l’. ‘l’ can have any values from 0,1,2,3, (n-1), where n is the number of prinicipal energy levels is a given atom. This means that l can have any integral value starting from zero and ending up at (n-1).

There is another method which can help us to designate the sublevels in an atom with the given value of l.

For a given subshell, the orbitals are designated with the help of ml, which also describes the direction of electron cloud which surrounds the nucleus in the given space. This quantum number can have integral values ranging  from –l to +l including zero. The fourth quantum number also known as spin quantum number is denoted by ms and is not related with any of the three quantum numbers .It can have only wo values +1/2 and -1/2 to depict the spin of the electron in clockwise and anti-clockwise direction respectively.  According to Pauli exclusion principal, no two electrons can have same set of all the four quantum numbers.This means that no two electrons can have same spin in an orbital.
