Two concrete spans of a 250-m-long bridge are placed end to end so that no room is allowed for expansion (Fig. P10.63a). If the temperature increases by 20.0°C, what is the height y to which the spans rise when they buckle (Fig. P10.63b)?
A steel rod 0.45 m long and an aluminum rod 0.31 m long, both with the same diameter, are placed end to end between rigid supports with no initial stress in the rods. The temperature of the rods is now raised by 35.6 C0 . What is the stress in each rod?
A cylindrical vessel (D=108,02 cm) is filled with water (ρ=1000 kg/m3, c=4.187 kJ/kg.K) to a depth of 138,6 cm. The initial temperature of the water is 15°C. Determine the time [min] required to increase the water temperature to 50°C when it is immersed into tank, filled with oil at 105°C. (NOTE: The overall heat transfer coefficient between the oil and the water is 284 W/m2.K. The surface area is 4.2 m2.)
