Mutations are heritable changes which occur in an organism. Bacteria exploit this mutation in order to overcome the effect of antibiotics that they are exposed to, in order to retrieve a dwindling population. Antibiotics are chemical substances which inhibit or prevent the growth of bacteria and are used to treat bacterial infections as part of diagnosis by the physician.
