Explanation of Solution

Density of the penny can be calculated using the equation given below.

    d=PdCu+QdZn100        (1)

Where,

    P is the percent of copper.

    Q is the percent of zinc.

    dCu is the density of copper.

    dZn is the density of zinc.

Volume of the penny is calculated using the equation given below.

    V=πr2h        (2)

Diameter of the penny is given as 19.05mm.  Radius can be calculated as shown below.

    Radius=Diameter2=19.05mm2=9.525mm

Height of penny is given as 1.224mm.  Substituting these values in equation (2), the volume of penny can be calculated as shown below.

    V=πr2h=3.14×(9.525mm)2×1.224mm=348.7mm3

Obtained volume is converted into cubic centimeter using the conversion factor as shown below.

    V=348.7mm3×0.001cm31mm3=0.3487cm3

Mass of the penny is given as 2.500g.  Volume of penny is 0.3487cm3.  Density can be calculated as shown below.

    d=mV=2.500g0.3487cm3=7.169gcm3

Density of copper is given as 7.13gcm3 and density of zinc is given as 8.96gcm3

Substituting these values in equation (1), the percentage mass of copper can be calculated as shown below.

    d=PdCu+QdZn100=PdCu+(100P)dZn100=P(7.13gcm3)+(100P)8.96gcm3100

Simplifying the above equation.

    7.169gcm3=P(7.13gcm3)+(100P)8.96gcm3100716.9gcm3=P(7.13gcm3)+(100P)8.96gcm3P(7.13gcm3)P(8.96gcm3)=896gcm3+716.9gcm3P×1.83gcm3=179.1gcm3P=179.1gcm31.83gcm3=97.86%

Therefore, the percentage by mass of copper in modern penny is 97.86%.
