Chapter 1, Problem 1IA.4Q
Summary Introduction
To identify:
Whether the given matter is an element/compound and an atom/molecule.
Introduction:
Anything which occupies space and has mass is called matter. There are two types of matter. They are,
- Pure substances
- Mixtures
The substances which have a fixed composition throughout are called pure substances. Pure substances are classified into two types; elements and compounds. Elements are the pure substances which are made up of the same type of atoms. Compounds are the pure substances which are made up of different types of atoms in a fixed ratio.
An atom is the smallest unit of an element containing properties of that element. A molecule is a combination of two or more than two atoms.
