Question
Chapter 1, Problem 39EQ
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The total number of valance electrons in the given structure is to be counted and the formal charge on both the Oxygen atoms is to be calculated.
Concept Introduction:
Some organic
To calculate the formal charge on an atom in any given structure it is necessary to distinguish between the electrons that make up an atom’s octet and the electrons that formally “belong” to an atom. In any given Lewis structure all electrons associated with an atom either as an unshared pair or shared pair are part of that atom’s octet.

Please refer to the example image to answer. You must use CER, claim-evidence-reasoning. Make sure that your answer is CLEAR and explained well.
Claim is your answer to the question. Evidence is from the image and reasoning is your explanation.
Proper evidence for all Lewis structures include:
Most electronegative atom must be in the center.
Octet of electrons surrounding each atom.
Total number of electrons depicted equals same total number of valence electrons from each participating atom.
Make sure to refer to the example image because it shows the correct Lewis structures. The question you're answering is about the students drawing of CH20.
How do you find the total number of valence electrons for OF2?
What is the central atom?
How many atoms are single bonded to the central atom?
How many atoms are double or triple bonded to the central atom?
How many lone pairs are on the central atom?
Each pictured Lewis structure is invalid. Identify the error in each case.

Draw the attraction between a water molecule and a molecule of BrCl4F. Br is the central atom in an expanded octet - count your electrons carefully.
First, draw one molecule and add the partial charges where needed - use the ΔEN to determine the types of bonds. Then, draw the second molecule so that the δ+ on one molecule lines up across from the δ- on the other. Since we can't draw the molecules here you will answer questions about the drawings that you made on the homework worksheet.
BrCl4F has one __________ bond between the Br and F with ΔEN = ____________ , and four ________ bonds between the Br and Cl with a ΔEN = _________ .
The central Br has 6 REDs and the molecule is symmetrical/asymmetrical (answer is ___________ ) making it a polar/nonpolar (answer is __________ ) molecule.
