Concept explainers
Outside the United States speed is measured in Kilometers per hour (km/h) rather than miles per hour (mph). Although the exact conversion from km/h to mph is 0.57, a conversion factor of 0.6 is generally used because it is easier to remember. For the reverse conversion a factor of 1.7 is normally used. Perform the following conversions using the approximate conversion factors.
- What is the speed in mph of an automobile on the German Autobahn traveling at 160km/h?
- What is the speed in km/h of a motorcycle traveling at 70 mph in the United States?

- A family in Charlotte wants to drive to a campsite next to Mt. Mitchell. Their trip will take them 2km up in elevation. They have the choice of taking their top-of-the-line Tesla model S P100D, which when fully charged has 100 kWh of stored energy in the batteries (and for this problem is 100% efficient at converting its stored energy into kinetic energy) and a mass of 2200kg, or their choice of taking their 2021 Ford F-150. Gasoline has an energy density of 34.2 Megajoules per liter. The family owns the smallest 2021 Ford F-150, and so it has a fuel tank of 23 gallons. Assume the F-150’s engine is able to convert 30% of the energy stored in its gasoline tank into kinetic energy (typical efficiency for gasoline engines), with the rest of the stored energy in the gasoline lost to heat. The mass of this model F-150 is about 2000kg. They are going to tow their big pop-up trailer to the campsite. For this question, assume that each vehicle must use a combined 79 kWh of energy to combat the…arrow_forwardA printed circuit board (PCB) machine installs integrated circuits onto a board. Beforestarting to produce a board, the PCB machine requires a 20-minute setup. Once in production, the PCB machine requires only 0.15 minute per board.a. Currently, the PCB machine produces 500 boards between setups. Given this operating process, what is the capacity of the PCB machine (in boards per minute)?b. Currently, the PCB machine produces 500 boards between setups. Given this operating process, what is the utilization of the PCB machine?c. Demand for boards occurs at the rate of 2 boards per minute. What is the smallest batchsize such that the PCB machine does not constrain the flow rate through the process?arrow_forwardThe circuit shown in Figure P1.67 is the electrical model for an electronic megaphone, in which the 8–Ω resistance models a loudspeaker, the source V x and the 5–kΩ resistance represent a microphone, and the remaining elements model an amplifier. Given that the power delivered to the 8–Ω resistance is 8 W, determine the current circulating in the right-hand loop of the circuit. Also, determine the value of the microphone voltage V x.arrow_forward
- answer with detailed computationsarrow_forwardAn electrical cartridge heater is used to heat water to a temperature of 50C in a manufacturingprocess. The heater is powered by 240V source and draws 15A of current. The length and diameterof the cartridge heater are 60cm and 1.5cm respectively. If the heater is immersed in the watersuch that the heat transfer coefficient is 4500 ?/?2 ?, find the surface temperature of the cartridgeheater.arrow_forwardPlease answer using MATLAB code and provide simulation results where possiblearrow_forward
