Explanation An approximate measure of harmful environmental impacts of people, cities, countries, natural resources, and ecosystem is known as ‘ecological footprint.’ An average of ecological footprints of an individual in a given population or area is known as ‘a per capita ecological footprint.’ The ability of an ecosystem to regenerate the renewable resources used by a population, city, region and country in a given time is known as ‘biocapacity’ or ‘biological capacity.’ An area is said to have an ecological deficit when the total observed ecological footprints are larger than the biological capacity of that area. Humans are living unsustainably by depleting natural capital which provides ecosystem services and natural resources. The IPAT model was developed by Paul Ehrlich and John Holdren in the early 1970s to measure environmental impacts. This model shows the environmental impact (I) of human activities is the result of three factors: population size (P), affluence (A) or natural resource consumption per person, and the effects of technologies (beneficial or harmful). The IPAT model is summarized in the following equation: Impact (I) = Population (P)
