Chapter 10, Problem 10.1PP

Determine the energy loss due to a sudden enlargement from a 50 mm O D   x   2.4 mm wall plastic pipe to a 90 mm O D   x   2.8 mm wall plastic pipe when the velocity of flow is 3 m/s in the smaller pipe.

To determine

The energy loss due to sudden enlargement.

Answer to Problem 10.1PP

The energy loss due to sudden enlargement in terms of head is hl=0.233m.

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

For pipe 1:

Outer Diameter D = 50 mm

Pipe wall thickness t1= 2.4 mm

Thus, Inner diameter of the pipe 1 = D − 2t = 45.2 mm

The velocity of flow v1= 3 m/s

For pipe 2:

Outer Diameter D = 90 mm

Pipe wall thickness t2= 2.8 mm

Thus, Inner diameter of the pipe 2 = D − 2t = 84.4 mm

Calculation:

The energy loss due to sudden enlargement is given in terms of head lost. The formula for head loss due to sudden expansion is given by:

   hl=V122×g(1(d1d2)2)2          ...... (1)

Putting given values in equation (1)

   hl=322×9.81(1(45.2×10384.4×103)2)2

   hl=0.233m

Conclusion:

Thus, the energy loss due to sudden enlargement in terms of head is hl=0.233m.

Q.3) Determine the energy loss that will occur as 100 Liters / min of water flows from a small copper tube to a larger tube through a gradual enlargement having an included angle of 30 degrees. The small tube has a 25 mm OD x 1.5 wall thickness; the large tube has an 80 mm OD x 2.8 mm wall thickness.
Question 8 Two reservoirs are connected by a pipe whose total length is 360m.From the upper reservoir the pipe is 300mm in diameterfor a length of 150m and the remaining 210m is 450mm in diameter.The difference in water levels between the two reservoirs are 8m.Take f=0.006 for the smaller pipe and f=0.005 for the larger pipe.If all the changes in pipe sections are sharp and sudden, calculate the flow rate which can be delivered.
