It allows defining new protocol without affecting the basic aspect of lower protocol. It provides a standard rule for the interaction in the network and implemented using hardware and software or using both. Lower protocols are defined for the low-level layer and provide the physical and electrical transmission. Higher protocols are defined for the high-level layer and provide the format and additional feature for the communication. FTP: Connection-oriented network application transfers a file from one location to another location using File Transfer Protocol (FTP). The FTP provides guarantee that the information travelled through the network reaches the corresponding receiver in the same transmission order. Additionally, it guarantees that there will be no loss of information between the sender and receiver. Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX): WiMAX is the upcoming new technology standard that is used for long-distance wireless communications. The technology is designed to overlap the Wi-Fi and DSL (Digital Subscriber Line). Wi-Fi covers short range wireless communication. DSL covers long range but it is wired communication.
