Chapter 10, Problem 12SQ
Summary Introduction

Introduction: A female mammal’s somatic cells consist of two X chromosomes, which are inherited from its parents. Those two chromosomes are tightly condensed and thereby one of them will get inactivated. This condensed form of X chromosome is called as a Barr body and the process of formation of Barr body is called as X chromosome inactivation. This is a normal process that takes place in the body of female mammals to equalize the expression of the sex cells.

The characteristic “X” shape of chromosomes is _____. a. a result of maximum compaction of the chromosome b. due to the wrapping of DNA around histones c. only evident during cell division d. indicative of a cell that is no longer dividing e. only found in the female sex chromosome
Pairs of chromosomes with almost identical geneticcomposition and that are found in cells of both males andfemales are calleda. sex chromosomes.b. autosomes.c. polyploid.d. chromatids.
Humans with aneuploidy who survive usually have incorrect numbersof chromosome 13, 18, or 21 or the sex chromosomes. A possibleexplanation why these abnormalities permit survival is becausea. the chromosomes have clusters of genes that aid in embryonicgrowth.b. the chromosomes are small and carry relatively few genes.c. of X-chromosome inactivation.d. of both b and c.
