Explanation

Metamorphism normally takes place where the crustal rocks are subjected to high pressure and/or high heat. The high pressures are generated by deep burial or by tectonic processes, and the heat is generated from rising magma that modifies the adjacent rock or where the rocks are altered by combined effect of both heat and pressure.

Metamorphism causes minerals to recrystallize and to realign perpendicular to the direction of applied stress with sufficient pressure and temperature, creating parallel wavy bands or flat surfaces known as foliation.

For example, some shales metamorphose to rock slate, and represent extremely thin foliation layers in which individual layers cleave or break apart, along parallel planar surfaces. Schist represent thin foliation layers where individual mineral grains exhibit a flattened elongated structure, referred to as platy, and rocks tend to flake apart along these bands...
