Chapter 10, Problem 1P
Summary Introduction

To identify:

The two cell types in neural tissue.

Introduction:

The nervous system consists of neural tissues. They are comprised of blood vessels and connective tissues. Neural tissue is a major class of tissues that plays an essential role in building up the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. Neural tissues function in integration and communication. Neural tissue involves two types of cells:neurons and neuroglia.

Explanation of Solution

1)

Neurons:

Neurons are specialized nerve cells that transmit nerve impulses. These are located in the region of the brain and spinal cord. Neurons are interconnected to each other within the brain and spinal cord.

A neuron involves a cell body, and nerve fibers (dendrites and an axon) in its structure. Neurons are the basic unit of working within the nervous system. Approximately 100 billion neurons are contained by a human brain.

2)

Neuroglia:

These are supporting cells that are located throughout the nervous system. They provide physical support and electrical insulation within the brain and spinal cord. They also help in removing debris from the nervous system.

Neuroglia cells are present in the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. Microglial, ependymal, and astrocytes cells are types of neuroglia cells that are found in CNS (central nervous system). Satellite and Schwann cells are the neuroglia cells that are located in PNS (peripheral nervous system).

Conclusion

Neurons and neuroglia combine to build up the neural tissue.
