Worldwide renewable energy consumption has been increasing over the last 30 years and is expected to continue increasing. Consider the following graph showing both historical and projected consumption of energy by type. a. What is the total projected increase in world renewable energy consumption in quads between 1990 and 2040? What is the yearly increase? b. What is the percent projected increase in world renewable energy consumption between 1990 and 2040? What is the yearly percent increase?

Chapter 10, Problem 43E, Worldwide renewable energy consumption has been increasing over the last 30 years and is expected to

a. What is the total projected increase in world renewable energy consumption in quads between 1990 and 2040? What is the yearly increase?

b. What is the percent projected increase in world renewable energy consumption between 1990 and 2040? What is the yearly percent increase?

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The total projected increase and the yearly increase, the percent projected increase and the yearly percent increase in world renewable energy consumption in quads between 1990 and 2040 are to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

Coal and petroleum are fossil fuels that are getting depleted day by day.

In today’s era, there is an urgent need of using alternatives for fossil fuels.

There are renewable resources, which can be used to generate power.

Explanation of Solution

a) The total projected increase in world renewable energy consumption in quads between 1990 and 2040 and the yearly increase.

The total projected increase in world renewable energy consumption in quads between 1990 and 2040 is determined as follows:

From the graph,

Renewable energy consumption in 2040 is approximately equal to 120 quads.

Renewable energy consumption in 1990 is approximately equal to 35 quads.

The increase in consumption can be calculated by obtaining the difference in the consumption of renewable energy between 1990 and 2040.

So,

The increase in consumption=120 quads35 quads=85 quads

Total increase in years is 20401990=50 yr.

The yearly increase is given as follows:

yearly increase=85 quads50 yr=1.7 quads/yr

Hence, the yearly increase is 1.7 quads/yr.

b) The percent projected increase in world renewable energy consumption between 1990 and 2040 and the yearly percent increase
