Textbook Problem

# In Exercises 75 and 76, use the method of Example 4 to list approximate values of f ( x ) for x in the given range. Graph f ( x ) together with f ' ( x ) for x the given range. f ( x ) = x + 2 x − 3 ;      4 ≤ x ≤ 5

To determine

To calculate: The approximate values of f(x) for x where f(x)=x+2x3 in the range 4x5 and graph the function f(x) together with f(x) for x using technology.

Explanation

Given Information:

The function is f(x)=x+2x3 and the range is 4x5

Calculation:

Steps to calculate approximate value of the function f(x)=x+2x3 using Excel Spread sheet is as follows:

Step1. Name cells A1, B1 and C1 as x, f(x), f(x) and Xmin respectively.

Step2. Click on A2 and add the formula “=$E$1”.

Step3. Click on A3 and add the formula “=A2+$E$2” in the formula tab and drag the formula to the cells through A3 to A12.

Step4. Click on B2 and add the formula “=(A2+2)/(A23)” in the formula tab and drag the formula to the cells through B3 to B12.

Step5. Click on C2 and add the formula “=(B3B2)/$E$2” in the formula tab and drag the formula to the cells through C3 to C12.

Step6. Enter the value of Xmin as 4 and enter the value of h in E2 as 0
