Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

ΔH for the given reaction should be calculated.

S(s)+O2(g)SO2(g) (1)

Concept Introduction:

ΔH stands for change in enthalpy.

The amount of heat released or absorbed in a reaction which occurs at constant pressure is known as change in enthalpy.

Explanation

Given information:

S(s)+32O2(g)SO3(g)

ΔH=395.2 kJ

2SO2(g)+O2(g)2SO3(g)

ΔH=198.2 kJ

According the two given reactions, in first reaction sulfur is present on the reactant side, which is correct for the reaction (1) and in second reaction, SO2(g) is present on the reactant side, but according to reaction (1), it must be on product side. Therefore, flip the second reaction which makes sign of change in enthalpy positive.

2SO3(g)2SO2(g)+O2(g)

ΔH=+198
