The researchers sought to explore the connection between dietary fat consumption and the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events in a cohort of 5,115 young adults of both Black and White backgrounds. In 1985, these individuals underwent an initial examination. Over the subsequent 35 years, those who were initially free of disease were monitored to investigate the potential associations between their dietary fat intake and the occurrence of CVD events. Among the 2,100 young adults who had a high-fat diet at the start of the study, 255 experienced a new CVD event. Among the 3,015 young adults who did not have a high-fat diet at baseline, 125 experienced a new CVD event during the follow-up period.
Risk of CVD events among those with a high-fat diet is ____.
Risk of CVD events among those without a high-fat is ____.
The relative risk is ____.
Noting the paucity of information on the effect of estrogen on platelet membrane fatty acid composition, Ranganath et al. (A-48) conducted a study to examine the possibility that changes may be present in postmenopausal women and that these may be reversible with estrogen treatment. The 31 women recruited for the study had not menstruated for at least 3 months or had symptoms of the menopause. No woman was on any form of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) at the time she was recruited. Table 5 shows the platelet membrane linoleic acid values before and after a period of HRT. What is the t critical value? 4 decimal places

One issue is to what extent supplementation with vitamin A affected their serum-retinol levels. The serum-retinol data in Table 10.31 were obtained over 3 years of follow-up among 73 males taking 15,000 IU/day of vitamin A (vitamin A group) and among 57 males taking 75 IU/day of vitamin A (the trace group; this is a negligible amount compared with usual dietary intake of 3000 IU/day) 10.68 What test can be used to assess whether meanserum retinol has increased over 3 years among subjects inthe vitamin A group? 10.70 One assumption of the test in Problem 10.68 is thatthe distribution of serum retinol is approximately normal. To verify this assumption, the investigators obtained a frequency distribution of serum retinol at year 0 among malesin the vitamin A group, with data as shown in Table 10.32.…arrow_forward
- Recently there has been quite a bit of controversy about the lack of definitive knowledge about the adverse side effects associated with hormone-based birth control usage. Suppose a researcher is interested in the effects of birth control in women aged 18-25 relevant to blood pressure. The researcher assumes that women in this demographic that are taking hormone-based birth control are at risk for increased blood pressure. Assume the following table contains the summary statistics of two SRSs, one from a cohort of women taking hormone-based birth control, and one from a cohort of women birth control free. The mothers of a group of cases (infants' deaths, with an underlying respiratory cause named on the death certificate) will be interviewed about the breast-feeding status of the child prior to the illness leading to death. The results will be compared to with those obtained from mothers of a group of healthy controls regarding the current breast-feeding status of their infants. It is expected that about 40% of controls will be bottle-fed, and we would like to detect a difference if bottle-feeding was associated with a two-fold increase of death (OR-2). A. How many cases and controls need to be studied to give a 90% power of achieving 5% significance level. Copy and paste/print the answer from the software. B.
