Different discoveries to propose the structure of atom were given by different scientists. Rutherford did an experiment known as gold foil alpha ray diffraction experiment in which he discovered nucleus. Later, he also proposed a structure of atom but failed due to its limitations. Bohr then, proposed another structure in which he concluded that the electrons are revolving around the nucleus in a definite energy orbital. The energy of these orbitals is quantized. He also commented on the dual nature of electrons.

b. Due to limitations of Thomson’s model of atom, Rutherford conducted an experiment in 1911 known as gold foil alpha ray diffraction. In this experiment, he used a very thin layer of gold foil and alpha rays were bombarded on this foil. He found that most of the rays get to the detector and only a few reflects back with greater diffraction. He thus concluded that there is a hard mass in the centre of atom which contains protons. Discovery of neutrons was not at that time, so he only concluded the existence of protons in nucleus.
