Textbook Problem

The time for 75% consolidation of a 25-mm clay specimen (drained at top and bottom) in the laboratory is 22 minutes. How long will it take for a 6-m thick clay layer in the field to undergo 55% consolidation under the same pressure increment? In the field, there is a rock layer at the bottom of the clay.

To determine

Calculate time taken for 55% consolidation of 6 m thick clay layer in the field.

Explanation

Given information:

The degree of consolidation in the laboratory (U) is 75%.

The thickness of the clay specimen in the laboratory (H) is 25mm.

The time taken for 75% consolidation (t75) is 22minutes.

The thickness of the clay layer in the field (Hdr(field)) is 6m.

The degree of consolidation in the field (U) is 55%.

Calculation:

At laboratory:

Calculate the time factor (Tv) as shown below.

Refer Table 11.7 “Variation of Tv with U” in the Text Book.

Take the value of Tv as 0.477, for the value U of 75%.

Calculate the length of maximum drainage path (Hdr) using the relation.

Hdr=H2

Substitute 6m for H.

Hdr=252=12.5mm×1m1,000mm=0.0125m

Calculate the coefficient of consolidation (cv) using the relation.

Tv=cvt75Hdr2

Substitute 0.477 for Tv, 22minutes for t75, and 0.0125m for Hdr.

0.477=cv×220.01252140,800cv=0
