Generally the substance that is present in larger amount is called solvent, and solute is any component in a solution other than the solvent. Solute is generally in lower amount compared to the solvent. Also, the solvent often is volatile.

In the figure, we are given two components- X (blue sphere) and Y (red sphere). We can see that there are many more blue spheres than red spheres. Additionally, a few of the blue spheres are also present in vapor (gaseous) form above the mixture. Based on these observations, we can say that the blue spheres represent solvent particles and red spheres represent solute particles.
