Chapter 11, Problem 1.1Q
Summary Introduction

To determine: The genes used to synthesis amino acids and to break down amino acids are expected to be inducible, repressible, or constitutive.

Introduction: Amino acids are organic compounds that consist of amino and carboxyl functional groups. Amino acids are often called the building blocks of proteins. It is needed for vital processes such as synthesis of neurotransmitters of hormones.

Explanation of Solution

The compounds that stimulate the transcription of a particular gene are called inducers and the genes activated by the inducers are called inducible genes. The compounds that reduce the transcription of the particular genes are called repressors and the genes that can be reduced off by repressors are called repressible genes. The constitutive genes are mostly present at constant amount in all cells.

Some enzymes are involved in the nonessential amino acid synthesis and are not required if the diet has adequate levels of relevant amino acids and are likely to be repressible. Thus, the genes used to synthesis amino acids are inducible and the genes used to break down amino acids are repressible.
