Chapter 11, Problem 13TYK
Summary Introduction

To review:

The significance of mutation in meiotic and somatic cells of the survival of the individual and also to the species to which that individual belongs.

Introduction:

There are two types of cell division process: mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis is the process of cell division in which ploidy of daughter cells or chromosome number remains same to the parent cells. Meiosis is the process of division of cells that reduces the chromosome number by half and results in half the ploidy of chromosomes (as compared to parent cell) in daughter cells.

Propose a hypothesis that could explain the following observation. A graduate student performing studies on mutations in drosophila (fruit flies) discovered a strain of flies with a silent mutation in the gene controlling the shape of the wings. Further investigation has shown that this mutation is lethal in flies who are homozygote. Flies that are homozygote wild type or heterozygote can develop and are able to survive.
Modern synthesis questions why are ideas about genetics in modern synthesis of biology helfpul in relation to insects today? Thomas hunt Morgan believed genetic mutations were the source if genetic issues and he expoxed flies to radiation and then breed the mutants. what would he use as a control group
Describe Thomas Malthus’s theory of human reproduction. Does it make sense for some species—say, bacteria or rabbits? What do you think makes humans different?
