It involves the dissolution of metal ions in the presence of atmospheric oxygen and moisture, which provides an electrolytic environment, thus resulting in the formation of insoluble deposits.

Explanation of Solution

The oxidation of paint and rusting of iron is called corrosion. Atmospheric oxygen can break down the molecular structure of paint. Upon exposure to atmospheric oxygen, paint molecules lose electrons. Subsequently, over time, the paint appears dull and chalky.
