Explanation of Solution

Iron and steel:

Iron and steel have many differences. Mainly, iron is an element, whereas steel is an alloy that contains carbon and iron. Steel alloy contains greater percentage of iron in it. Iron that comprises not greater than 2% of carbon is named as steel, while iron that contains not less than 2% of carbon is termed as pig iron. Pig iron is obtained when the iron ore is processed with coke in a blast furnace.

Wrought iron and cast iron:

Wrought iron represents both the formation process and material type. It is a specific variety of iron that contains different additives making it low corrosive and more flexible. This iron is particularly used for finished iron goods. It can be easily welded and forged. It is a mechanical mixture of refined metallic iron that consists of low carbon content and 1–3% of iron silicate. Wrought iron is valued for its corrosiveness, tensile strength, malleability, and well-defined finish.

Cast iron is a liquid iron that has casted by pouring it into a mold and permitted to cool and harden to form a completed structural shape. A very basic form of cast iron is pig iron. Cast iron has 2–4% of carbon content, which makes it very brittle and hard. It is virtually impossible to shape because of its hard and brittle nature, even when it heated. It corrodes quite simply.
