Problems 22–24 are based on the following query:

SELECT P_CODE, P_DESCRIPT, P_PRICE, P.V_CODE, V_STATE
FROM PRODUCT P, VENDOR V
WHERE P.V_CODE = V.V_CODE
  AND V_STATE = 'NY'

ORDER BY P_PRICE;

Write the command(s) used to generate the statistics for the PRODUCT and VENDOR tables.

Program Plan Intro

Database statistics:

  • Database statistics is about gathering measurement about the database objects.
  • Gathering this type of information in the form of statistics can provide a clear portrait about the characteristics of the DBMS.

Obtaining statistics of database:

  • The statistics of the database can be gathered in two ways:
    • Gathering information manually using Database Administrator.
    • Gathering information automatically using DBMS (Database Management System).
  • Newer DBMS gather statistics automatically; newer DBMS such as Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server and DB2.
  • Some of the methods of obtaining statistics manually include:
    • Use of SQL’s ANALYZE command to gather statistics.
    • Use of RUNSTATS procedure of IBM’s DB2.
    • Use of UPDATE STATISTICS procedure of Microsoft’s SQL server which provides Auto-update and Auto-create statistics options in the initialization parameters.

Syntax for creating database objects statistics manually are listed below:

The below are the different ways of creating statistics manually in different languages and they are:

Oracle:

ANALYZE <TABLE/INDEX>object_name COMPUTE STATISTICS;

MySQL:

ANALYZE TABLE <table_name>;

SQLServer:

UPDATE STATISTICS <object_name>;
