The working of a barometer is to be described.

Concept Introduction:

A barometer is an instrument used for measuring atmospheric pressure. There are mainly two types of barometers, namely a mercury barometer and an aneroid barometer.

The force exerted on the surface of an object per unit area by the weight of air is called atmospheric pressure.

Explanation of Solution

In mercury barometers, a long one end sealed mercury glass tube is turned upside down and inserted into a cistern (container) of mercury. Upon inverting the tube, a small amount of mercury flows out of the tube and into the cistern. The vacuum at the top of the tube may exert very little or no pressure on the surrounding environment. The surface of the mercury inside is pushed down by atmospheric pressure and, in turn, the mercury rises up with an equal pressure; the height of the mercury in the tube determines the atmospheric pressure...
