Explanation

The displacement or slippage of rocks along a plane (fracture surface or fault plane) is termed as faulting, and the fracture along which the displacement took place is called a fault. Tensional or compressional forces can be responsible for faulting.

When the tensional forces produce normal faults, the compressional forces produce reverse faults. In a normal fault, the block with the acute angle slides down with respect to the block on the other side of the fault having an obtuse angle, while the opposite happens in the reverse faults.

The map view of a wide region affected by tensional forces generally gives rise to a recurrent pattern of almost parallel normal faults, generating a sequence of alternating upthrown and downthrown fault blocks...
