Chapter 12, Problem 12.1P, Determine the internal resisting torque in the shaft shown at A, B, and C. Show the free-body

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

The externally resisting torque in the shaft at points A, B, and C

Answer to Problem 12.1P

   4 k-in.

   13 k-in.

   31 k-in.

Explanation of Solution

Given Information:

The shaft and torque acting on it are shown in the figure below:

Applied Statics and Strength of Materials (6th Edition), Chapter 12, Problem 12.1P , additional homework tip 1

Let internal resisting torque at A=Ta, at B=Tb and at C=Tc

Cutting a section at A, take the free body diagram from the left bearing to point A

Applied Statics and Strength of Materials (6th Edition), Chapter 12, Problem 12.1P , additional homework tip 2

At point A, for equilibrium the summation of torques must be zero T=0

   4 k-in..+Ta=0Ta=4 k-in.

At point B, the free body diagram from the left bearing

Applied Statics and Strength of Materials (6th Edition), Chapter 12, Problem 12.1P , additional homework tip 3

For equilibrium, the summation of torques must be zero T=0 at point B

   4 k-in.+9k-in.+Tb=0Tb=13 k-in.

At point C, the free body diagram from the left bearing

Applied Statics and Strength of Materials (6th Edition), Chapter 12, Problem 12.1P , additional homework tip 4

For equilibrium, the summation of torques must be zero T=0 at point C

   4 k-in.+9k-in.+18k-in.+Tb=0Tb=31 k-in.

Conclusion:

At point A, the internal resisting torque is 4 k-in. and it acts in the clockwise direction when viewed from the left bearing.

At point B the internal resisting torque is 13 k-in. and it acts in the clockwise direction when viewed from the left bearing.

At point C the internal resisting torque is 31 k-in. and it acts in the clockwise direction when viewed from the left bearing
