Question
Chapter 12, Problem 12.9P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The fact that the C-O stretch in ethers and esters occurs at 1000-1100cm-1, when the C is sp3 hybridized, but at 1250cm-1 when it is sp2 hybridized has to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

The Infrared spectroscopy is used for the determination of functional groups present in the organic compounds.  The IR spectroscopy occurs at the region of 4000-400cm-1.  In IR spectroscopy, the absorption occurs at the vibrational level.  At vibrational level, the molecule shows stretching and bending vibrations.  The region used for the determination of functional groups is 3500-1500cm-1 (functional group region), as most of the stretching and bending vibrations of functional groups occurs at this region.  The region of 1500-400cm-1 is known as finger print region.

y-Butyrolactone (C4H6O2, GBL) is a biologically inactive compound that is converted to the biologically active recreational drug GHB (Section 19.5) by a lactonase enzyme in the body. Since y-butyrolactone is more fat soluble than GHB, it is more readily absorbed by tissues and thus produces a faster onset of physiological symptoms. y-Butyrolactone shows an absorption in its IR spectrum at 1770 cm-1 and the following 1H NMR spectral data: 2.28 (multiplet, 2 H), 2.48 (triplet, 2 H), and 4.35 (triplet, 2 H) ppm. What is the structure of y-butyrolactone?
There are several isomeric alcohols and ethers of molecular formula C5H12O. Two of these exhibit the following 1H-NMR spectra. Propose a structure for each of the isomers. Isomer A:  δ = 0.92 (t, 7.8 Hz, 3 H), 1.20 (s, 6H), 1.49 (q, 7.8 Hz, 2H), 1.85 (s, 1H) ppm Isomer B:  δ = 1.19 (s, 9 H), 3.21 (s, 3H) ppm
