Concept Introduction:

The distribution of the electrons that exists in the atomic orbital of an atom is collectively known as electronic configuration. The description of every electron in an orbital is given by the electronic configuration of that atom.

A photon always moves with a speed of light that is equal to 3×108m/s.

Explanation

The state of an atom that possesses the complete energy of electrons which cannot be lowered down by the transfer of electrons to another orbital is known as ground state of an atom. In ground state, all the electrons of an atom possess lowest energy levels.

The state of an atom in which some amount of energy is absorbed by a valence shell electron that leads to the migration of that electron to the higher energy level is known as excited state of an atom.

The smallest particle which is able to represent the quantum of visible light and any electromagnetic radiation is known as photon. It travels with a speed of light that is equal to 3×108m/s.

The excited atom returns back to its ground state by the release of some energy. In this procedure, the electron goes back to the lower energy level from the higher energy level by releasing the energy in the form of a photon.

The relation between the wavelength of light and the energy of the photons being emitted by an atom is,

E=hv

Where,

  • E is the energy of the photons being emitted by an atom.
  • h is the Planck’s constant.
  • v is the wavelength of light.

According to the above relation, the energy of the photons is directly proportional to the wavelength of light
