Chapter 12, Problem 169UP
To determine

Write a model for one quantitative variable that is at 4 different levels.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 169UP

The model for one quantitative variable that is at 4 different levels is,

E(y)=β0+β1x1+β2x2+β3x3where,x1={1if y is observed level20otherwisex2={1if y is observed level30otherwisex3={1if y is observed level40otherwise

Explanation of Solution

Calculation:

In general for a model relating to E(y) one qualitative independent variable with k variables, the model would be,

E(y)=β0+β1x1+β2x2+...+βk1xk1

Then the variable xi is the dummy variable for i+1 level. That is,

xi={1if y is observed leveli+1(levelA)0otherwise (levelB)

The model for one quantitative variable that is at 4 different levels is,

E(y)=β0+β1x1+β2x2+β3x3_

Where,

x1={1if y is observed level20otherwise_x2={1if y is observed level30otherwise_x3={1if y is observed level40otherwise_

For this model, the values of βi's are defined as,

β0=μAβ1=μBμAβ2=μCμAβ3=μDμA

Also, μi denotes the mean of y for the level I for the qualitative variable and are defined as,

μA=β0μB=β0+β1μC=β0+β2μD=β0+β3
