The wave mechanical picture of the hydrogen atom should be used to describe the process when atom absorbs energy and moves to the excited state. For a hydrogen atom, principal energy levels and the sublevels should be explained.

Concept Introduction:

The observations obtained from hydrogen emission and absorption spectrums gives clear evidence for the existence of the quantized energy levels. There is the promotion of a hydrogen atomic sample to an excited state of energy takes place, which then releases radiation to release excess energy and come back to a lower state of energy.

Explanation

As described in the answer section atoms are capable of absorbing energy from photons that constitutes electromagnetic radiation if and only the energy has a certain discrete value. After absorbing the energy, the atoms would migrate into a state called “an excited state” that possess higher energy. The excited state of an atom is relatively unstable. Therefore, atoms would come back to a state of lower energy which has higher stability by emitting radiation. If this radiation energy emitted matches the energy of the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum one could observe the colors which is observed in the atomic emission spectrum of hydrogen as shown below...
