Concept introduction:
An ionic bond is the attraction between two ions which contains opposite charges. A metal cation is strongly attracted towards nonmetal anions which are held together by an ionic bond. When the valence electrons are shared by two atoms, the bond that is formed is known as a covalent bond.
Answer to Problem 1CE
The bond formed between a metal cation and nonmetal anion is ionic bond and the bond formed between two nonmetal atoms is a covalent bond.
Explanation of Solution
A metal cation is attracted towards a nonmetal anion which leads to the formation of an ionic bond. For example,
Metal cation and nonmetal anion forms an ionic bond whereas the bond between two nonmetal atoms is a covalent bond.
